Chas, Thanks for your comment. I am not advocating abandoning traditional marketing. I think that you have to work on multiple fronts - there's no silver bullet in either traditional marketing or social media marketing. And social media marketing that isn't backed up by a solid grass roots marketing strategy including great customer service won't do a whole lot. However, social media marketing is a relatively quick and inexpensive way to expand your reach quickly and effectively.

But if you can get better results with \"old school\" marketing focus efforts, you should work on that instead.

I love your metaphors. And you're so right. Direct response copy is very challenging, but also very rewarding. To write "salesmanship in print", we need to really know how to be a salesperson. But a lot of people simply don't know how to sell, in the first place. That is one of the big KEYS.

I agree that client loyalty is extremely important. Do you use any software that you can recommend for measuring client loyalty? I am familiar with ServicePerformance at http://www.thedanielgroup.com. I would be interested to learn about any programs you might use.

Hi. Loved your post.

Very common interpretation of 6p's however. Proper planning prevents pretty poor performance. Sometimes the word pretty is substituted for something less apporpriate.

Rock on!

Thanks Jake - good observation. And you're absolutely correct, of course. We are emotional beings, and as you pointed out, it's impossible to interact without triggering some emotion, whether intentionally or not.

I think another wrinkle to the whole concept is that there's often confusion between involving someone emotionally, and actually trying to overpower their will. Trying to impose your will on someone else by overpowering their will is obviously not okay.

However, I think often perceptions regarding the two concepts get confused.

Is it wrong to ask "is it wrong to use emotional triggers"?

By including the notion of write/wrong in the question, it automatically creates an emotional/ethical/moral response.

Just kidding, but the point is there.

It's not only impossible to sell without tripping triggers, it's impossible to interact.

The question isn't should we use triggers, it's how can we use them responsibly, as you indicated.

Good onel
